REFLECTION

3 WORDS TO DESCRIBE THE GL JOURNEY
• Excited
- Cross-Disciplinary Subjects would be replaced with TP Fundamentals
- Interested in the Chinese culture, especially the language
- Upset as I wanted to take a Mandarin related subject but could not do so
- Excited because I could carry out a project about something I was passionate about

• Exhausted
- Research and preparation work felt like a burden because of hectic schedule --> stressed out
- Questioned myself whether it was the right decision to take up GL instead of Global Studies 2

• Meaningful
- Learnt a lot about the current Mandarin situation in Singapore
- Example: local organisations and events that promote Mandarin, importance of promoting Mandarin, students lack of motivation to learn Mandarin, Canada's successful bilingual education policy
- Help others learn ways to increase Mandarin usage
- Share practical tips with family members to help improve their Mandarin proficiency

HOW DID GL WORK FOR ME
Gave me an opportunity to explore something I have always wanted but had no time to do it
Helped me to gain independence for my own learning
Took responsibility for directing my own learning on an area I am interested in
Executed my proposal and curated evidence of my learning with deliverables and learning logs
TP STUDENT ATTRIBUTES CULTIVATED
Self-directed
- Researched on the why students dislike Mandarin
- Interviewed people on my own
- Set my own deadlines and monitor own progress

Resilient
- Daunting process
- Wanted to give up, but persevered
- Example: Exhausted from reading research articles for academic paper and wanted to give up writing, but told myself the hard work will pay off eventually and continued researching after taking a break

• Problem-solving
- Came up with a solution to help cultivate students’ love for Mandarin from a young age
- Process of searching and discussing possible solutions with facilitator helped cultivate problem-solving skills
- Consider different perspectives before finding the best solution for the issue

SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING
Freedom to plan how and when I wanted to get things done
Designed learning strategies that suits me best to achieve my learning goals
Made me think about why I am carrying out the project in the first place
Appreciated the process more
The SDL aproach suits me
PROBLEMS FACED
Overwhelmed by the choices available, didn't know which direction to explore
Didn't know how to begin project
Relied on learning facilitator and secondary sources too much
Didn't complete learning goal of sharing session
WEAKNESSES ABOUT MYSELF
• Unprepared
- No back-up plan
- Assumed that every step in the GL journey will go smoothly
- Didn't plan for failure
If I could redo this project:
- Think of back-up plans for the sharing session
- Prepare for failure

• Poor time management skills
- Rushing through assignments and GL deliverables simultaneously
- Thought there was more time than there actually was
- Didn't follow the timeline set
If I could redo this project:
- Followed the timeline more strictly
- Start on my tasks right away
- Take the other assignments into consideration to not feel burned out

SKILLS ACQUIRED
• Digital skills
• Self-management skills
• Communication skills
• Social skills
How I would use these skills:
- Group projects -> clarify when in doubt, apply the coping strategies for
failure if something fails
- Knowledge gained from researching on the Mandarin situation in Singapore can be used in workforce in the future
